Ch. Orrkid's String of Pearls
(Ch. Mystery's Show BIS, SOM ex Bal d' Orr's Skirt)
5/30/86 - 4/27/97
Sophie was one
of three puppies I received from a co-owned/co-bred litter. She and her
two litter mates (Sonny & Sal) made their first trip to a dog show around 12
weeks of age. We traveled to a regional in Denver in a friend's motor
home. She also had a puppy about the same age and we had great fun.
At this regional, Reed Guthrie met and fell
in love with Sophie - he took her home from this show. Reed kept me
updated on her progress with pictures and letters.
He sent Sophie out with a handler and won a 4 point major from the puppy classes.
Because she was such a "wild child", she was sent back home to mature and settle
down. Reed was never able to put her back out with a handler due to many different circumstances.
Reed still kept in touch with me through
those years. He did show her himself at a few local shows.
I received a call from Reed's son in October of 1991 saying that Reed had died the night before and had left in writing
that he wanted me to have Sophie back. Dorothy Hazel kept Sophie until I was able to make arrangements to get her to Omaha.
By this time, Sophie was 5 but Dorothy thought that she looked good for her age and thought I should try showing her.
I decided that, if I did finish her, somehow Reed would know. I entered Sophie in a few shows and she won 2 more majors.
She finished at the age of 7 with people still asking me if the birth date in the catalog was correct.
The day I finished her, I called Dorothy Hazel and we cried on the phone. We decided that Reed somehow knew that Sophie was now a champion.
Sophie's one and only litter was not planned. Regardless
of our precautions, her litter brother Sonny bred her. The litter was born
by caesarian on July 8, 1992 - a flashy fawn dog and a plain brindle bitch.
We kept the fawn dog (Beau) and the brindle bitch (Dolly) went to live with
Sandy & Michael Backes.
Sophie lived her later days with my brother-in-law,
Parker. She died laying on the couch with her head in his lap at the age of 11.
